Manhattan: West Broadway - Canal Street

St. Alphonsus (Roman Catholic) Church and Rectory, 310-314 and 308 West Broadway (formerly 228 and 234 South Fifth Avenue), west side, between Canal and Grand Streets. The Hall (former school) is next door (off the picture at the right) at No. 316-328 West Broadway. This church was organized in 1847; but the present buildings were erected since, though probably not long after 1870, when South Fifth Avenue was created by widening Laurens Street from Canal to Amity Streets (West 3rd Street), and cutting it through the block to Washington Square.
