Queens: Union Hall Street - Jamaica Avenue

Union Hall Street, west side, north from the Long Island Railroad right of way, showing in a set of four views different aspects of the former Union Hall Academy. This institution first opened, May 1, 1792 in a Fulton Street (now Jamaica Avenue) structure and Malthy Gelston was the first principal. Dr. L.E.A. Eigenbrodt succeeded to this position which he held for 31 years until his death in 1828. During his incumbency this structure was erected; the cornerstone being laid in July 1820. Henry Onderdonck taught here during the years 1832 and 1865. 1873 saw the Academy close it's doors and the three buildings altered into dwellings which in 1876 were the homes of individuals named Smith, Hague, and Crane. A Childrens Court is stated to have been a lengthy occupant. They were still standing in 1929, tho a new apartment house was erected to the north of same.
