Manhattan: 23rd Street (East) - 4th Avenue

East 23rd Street (left), at the N.W. corner of Fourth Avenue (right), showing the National Academy of Design. This institution is the equivalent of the Royal Academy and of the Salon and was formed in 1826 by the New York Drawing Association. The building, designed by P.B. Wight, is of white and dark marble, in the Venetian Gothic architecture, and was paid for by public subscriptions. Adjoining on the right is the Lyceum Theatre.
