Manhattan: Madison Avenue - 38th Street (East)

Madison Avenue (right), at the S. E. corner of East 38th (left) Street, showing the Fifth Church of Christ Scientist. This structure was formerly occupied by the congregation of South Reformed Dutch Church, who purchased it in 1890 from the Sion Episcopal Church. A spire was mounted atop the tower at that time, tho not evident at this date. To the left is a view eastward on the south side of 38th Street, to Park Avenue. Two private buildings separate the Church from the Bonar Law mansion at 37th Street. This later became the National Democratic Headquarters, while the Church site was improved with the Midston Club.
