Manhattan: Battery Place - West Street

Battery Place, east from West to State Streets and showing buildings on the north side of same which at this date contained numerous rookeries, the result of their proximity to Castle Garden; the immigrant landing depot. The latter is in Battery Park; which appears partially on the right. Prominent edifices are (from left to right) the Standard Oil Building; the Welles Building; the Washington Building; The United States Custom House (flag atop) and the Battery Park Building. Note at Greenwich Street the elevated station of the first elevated line in New York; this today (1937) is used as a portion of the Sixth and Ninth Ave. lines. About 1889. Brown Brothers.
