First Avenue, west side, north from E. 34th Street, as viewed, northwestward from the "El" spur that subsequently was razed. Shown between 35th and 36th Streets is St. Gabriels Park. In the background at the right margin is a portion of a unit of Tudor City. Note the absence of skyscrapers on the horizon. View No. 2 is similar while No. 3 includes a portion of the easterly side of this thoroughfare with its smoke stacks of the Consolidated Edison Company generating plant. Note also in this scene the additional Tudor City units and the partial height increase of the Grand Central zone buildings. The construction of the 39th Street East river Tunnel in 1938 still necessitated the demolition of the 4 story tenements seen on the Avenue just this side of the recently erected loft building at E. 38th Street and which appears to blend into the Tudor City outline.
