Manhattan: Park Avenue - 32nd Street

Park Avenue, west side, north from and including 32nd Street. The new Park Avenue Building, on the west side from 32nd to 33rd Streets, was built in 1927, on the site of the old Park Avenue Hotel. The Vanderbilt Hotel, in the next block north, was built in 1911. Two street cars of the Madison and Fourth Avenue line are shown, a downtown car waiting for the light at 32nd Street, and an uptown car about to plunge into the old railway tunnel, which will be made over for automobile traffic in 1935, after this street car line has been discontinued and superseded by motor coaches. The Community Church (Unitarian), on the N.W. corner of 34th Street, will be demolished in 1931; and its place will be taken by an apartment building. The new Union League clubhouse will be built in 1930 on the S.W. corner of 37th Street. Up at 41st to 42nd Streets the Hotel Belmont, rising from behind the old Murray Hill Hotel, will be demolished in 1931. At the time of this picture the old Lincoln Bank building, adjoining the Biltmore at 42nd Street, has not yet been demolished; and the tower of the New York Central Building, north of the Grand Central Station, is still under construction.
