Manhattan: 21st Street - 6th Avenue

Old Jewish Cemetery for Spanish and Portuguese Jews, 21st Street, south side, just west of Sixth Avenue. This cemetery was first established in 1729 on the New Bowery at Chatham Square, the gift of Louis Gomez, a wealthy Portuguese Jew. Later, as the growing city began to encroach on the property, a new cemetery was built on open green spaces of the present location, where it was believed that the Partola Building, on the N.W. corner of Sixth Avenue and 21st Street, and is no longer used for burials.
