Brooklyn: Fulton Street - Water Street

(1) Fulton Street, north side, at and east of Water Street. At the corner is a view of the Franklin House, also known as the Brooklyn Hotel. It was established in 1840, by Ezekiel Baldwin, who was born in Hampshire, and whose trade was that of a blacksmith. He operated the place 41 years. It is said that William Caren, was the first proprietor in 1836, and held the place for several years. Captain King's Tavern, occupied the corner in earlier days. It was also later known as the Mariner's Tavern; later still, the Steamboat House, occupied a part of this site. The building of 1840, still stands.
