Islands - Hoffman Island - [Lower New York Bay.]

(1) Hoffman Island, in the Lower New York Bay, seen from the lower end of South Beach, at Ocean Breeze, Staten Island. It is an artificial island constructed in 1872 by the New York State Quarantine Service for the detention and purification of well persons arriving in infected vessels. In 1938 the island was reconditioned for use by the Training School of the United States Maritime Service, which prepares trained seamen under the supervision of the United States Coast Guard.
