Flushing Meadow Park (Queens): The pavilion of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (Russian) at the New York World's Fair 1939-40, seen across the Lagoon of Nations. Atop the tower of marble and porphyry at the entrance to the building is a stainless steel figure, designed by Vyacheslav Andreev, depicts the spirit of the Soviet worker. It weighs thirty tons and forms, after the Trylon--the World's Fair theme--the highest spot at the Fair. Architects of the pavilion are Boris M. Iofan and Karo S. Alabian.
