Manhattan: 5th Avenue - 43rd Street

(1) Temple Emanu-El, Fifth Avenue at N.E. corner of 43rd Street. This synagogue, built in 1868, was until its demolition in 1927 one of the city's landmarks. The site is now occupied by the Lefcourt Office Building, and a new Emanu-El has been built on Fifth Avenue at the northeast corner of 65th Street. In this picture the work of demolition is about to begin, as is evidenced by the scaffolding around the church. August 30, 1927. P. L. Sperr, Photographer. (2) Fifth Avenue at N.W.
