Manhattan: 5th Avenue - 35th Street

Fifth Avenue, west side, south from 35th Street, showing from left to right, the Caswell home (became the University Club and which was remodelled in the Queen Anne style in 1887 for the New York Club), the A. T. Stewart home (became the Manhattan Club in 1891), the twin Astor homes (removed separately for the Waldorf (in 1893) Astoria (about 1897) Hotel), and the then dominant Marble Collegiate Church (erected 1851-4). Absent in this view are two items that appear in slightly later photos. These are the Fifth Avenue Art Galleries, a two story structure, erected by the Caswell estate between their home and the Stewart house, and the Hotel Cambridge at the S. W. corner of 33rd Street.
