Manhattan: Houston Street (West - Broadway

W. Houston Street, south side, at and east across Broadway. 13-11 West Houston Street, adjoining the building at the S.W. corner, is being demolished. No. 9-1, the corner building, will shortly follow. The bend in Houston Street at Broadway -- West Houston Street joins Broadway at right angles, but East Houston does not -- is really the meeting place of the original Houston Street and of North Street, after the letter was extended west from the Bowery. Houston Street absorbed North Street in 1833, and the whole was renumbered west from the East River. The division of Houston Street into East and West did not come until after the absorption of Hammersley Street in 1858. September 19, 1929. P. L. Sperr.
