Queens: Kissena Boulevard - Sanford Avenue

Kissena Boulevard, at the N.E. corner of Sanford Ave., showing in a set of three views St. Joseph's Academy now St. Joseph's Convent. St. Thomas' Hall was erected in 1838-39 and was purchased in 1860 by Catholics who opened it as a Convent School for Young Ladies under the name of St. Joseph's Academy. A new building was added and it remained the main school until the Brentwood property was acquired. St. Thomas' Hall, was a school for boys, opened on April 12, 1843. Rev. Francis L. Hawks D.D., the founder had to abandon it to his creditors. This structure for a short time also housed the Flushing Female College, but this also was no success. Additions to this building by the Academy were: Central portion erected in 1868, west wing in 1872, and the Chapel in 1879. Sept. 4, 1897 Views 2 and 3: 1922 Eugene L. Armbruster Collection
