Manhattan: Downing Street - Bedford Street

(1) Downing Street, from Bedford to Bleecker Streets (future Sixth Avenue Extension), inclusive, favoring the south side, but showing part of 33 Downing Street, the old frame building at the N.E. corner of Bedford Street. The front of the house, on Downing Street, is faced with brick. The houses opposite the eastern end of Downing Street are the six-story tenements 211 and 217 Bleecker Street, which lie directly in the path of the projected subway and extension of Sixth Avenue. The Church of Our Lady of Pompeii, at the south corner of Bleecker Street (q.v.), and 8, 10 Downing Street, the five-story tenement houses on the south side, adjoining the church, will also be demolished the year after this photograph was taken. 1926.
