Manhattan: Downing Street - Bedford Street
(1) 24 to 12 Downing Street, south side, between Bedford Street and Sixth Ave. Extension, showing in an eastward direction, a row of low structures (Nos. 22 to 12 inclusive) under demolition. At the rear of these buildings was an enclosed court that was known as Downing Place. The factory building (No. 24) shown on the right will remain. Adjacent to same is the structure shown in View No. 2. October 11, 1937. P. L. Sperr (2) 22 Downing Street, a 3-story building with a 2 1/2-story frame addition at its rear. The immediate foreground formerly formed a court yard in the center of this block that known as Downing Place. December 11, 1937. P. L. Sperr The New York Times of October 20, 1940 reports the proposed erection of a modern 6 story apartment house on this site. An extensive account, including the early historic background may be found therein. This structure, fronting mainly on the new Sixth Avenue, will be identified as No. 10 Downing Street.
