Manhattan: 6th Avenue - 18th Street (West)

Sixth Avenue, south from West 18th Street, showing this newly recovered Manhattan thoroughfare. The old "El" structure that formerly occupied this zone has been demolished and a municipal subway constructed underground. Prior to the first World War (1917-18) this was the shopping center of the City. Extending from 14th to 23rd Street it later removed to 34th Street. The former Macy Department Store building is clearly apparent in the center of View 1. This is the large building at 14th Street that has two water tanks atop its roof. View 2 is limited to several of the buildings on the left of the preceding photo. They lie between 17th and 18th Streets. No. 600 (old No. 278) now occupied by the Liberty Shoe Company was formerly the McCrorey Building. The Price and Company Building is self-obvious. May 9, 1940 Views 1,2 P. L. Sperr
