Manhattan: Broadway - Battery Place

1-- Bowling Green, a northward view up Broadway from "Steamboat Row", showing a view of New York's first park. Note the iron railing around same and the lanterns thereupon. In the center is a pool and fountain. Early views (circa 1850 and 61) show this latter feature and which in subsequent views (1884) is absent, tho the pool remained. The last date given is that of Produce Exchange Building construction, replacing the buildings on the right. To the left on Broadway, appear ovate shaped sewer pipes and a partial excavation for same. These were introduced in 1860 and were 4x2.8 feet in diameter. In 1864 vitrified pipe was first laid. Across the foreground are suspended electric wires and at the extreme right is an old street illuminating gas lamp. Views similar to this are in these files and in a volume of newspaper clippings titled "New York City Views" American History Division - Room 300 New York Public Library, several of which are credited to the Consolidated Edison Company.
