Manhattan: 34th Street (East) - Flatbush Avenue

East 34th Street, at the East River station of the 34th Street spur line that connected the ferries at this point with the Second and Third Avenue "El" lines. This spur line originated as the result of legislation requiring all public transportation systems to provide a terminal at a ferry or railroad depot and was incorporated in their franchises. A similar structure was until recently on E. 42nd Street between the Third Avenue "El" and the Grand Central Station. The photographer is viewing northwesterly and shows same prior to demolition. This was accomplished in two steps. First to be razed, about this date, was the section shown. This included all tracks between the East River and Second Avenue. The section between the latter point and Third Avenue was torn down in the Summer of 1938. In the right background appears the Chanin Building at 42nd Street and Lexington Avenue. March 21, 1929. P.
