Queens: Metropolitan Avenue - 70th Avenue

Metropolitan Avenue, north side, opposite Seventieth Avenue (known also as Ursula Place and Herrick Avenue). This set of 3 views shows the home of Jeronus Vanderveer. John and Walter Vanderveer were the owners in 1923 while one Weeden was the occupant. Michael Vanderveer who settled in Newtown in 1810 was born in Flatbush in 1777. He married Martha Vandervoort of Newtown. His son Henry Sudyam was born in 1812 in the old house that stood across the road from his latter residence, which was on the west side of Trotting Course Lane just south of Metropolitan Avenue. The son, Henry Sudyam, married Sarah J. (Burroughs) Rapelje in 1847. George W. Vanderveer was born in the old family homestead in Newtown in 1842. He married in 1866 Mary Whitson of that place. Charles Boerum Vanderveer (1796-1879) owned a thirty-six acre farm at Middle Village. His son Jeronus purchased about 1871 a sixty acre one at the same place. After his fathers death he, Jeronus, acquired his fathers farm. Other owners of this house were H. Randall, 1860?; H. Weeden, 1873; and J. Vanderveer, in 1896.
