Queens: Main Street - 38th Avenue

Main St., west side, between Thirty-eighth and Thirty-ninth Aves., showing in a set of 4 views the St. George's Protestant Episcopal Church and the Peck and Bloodgood Cemetery. The first services of this Congregation were held in the blockhouse, which in 1704 was called the Guardhouse. It stood on a site on which the Orthodox Quaker's meeting house was erected in 1827. This site is now occupied by the new armory (east of the Hicksite Quaker's meeting house of 1694-5). The first church edifice was erected near Main St., facing on Thirty-eighth Ave., in 1743-46, and was completed in 1761. It stood on a one-half acre tract donated by Captain Ralph Wentworth in 1745. The second edifice seen partially in views 3 and 4 was erected in 1812 and consecrated either on May 25 or June 25, 1821 by Bishop Hobart and enlarged in 1838 or 40 at a cost of 1700. Twenty-six pews were added. It was removed to its present site facing Thirty-eighth Ave. in 1853 and repaired in 1858. It was demolished in 1920. The third edifice was erected between 1853 and 54 at a cost of 33,000 and later remodeled. The cornerstone was laid on May 18th or 24th 1853 and the building consecrated on June 1, 1854. Rev. J. Carpenter Smith was the rector from Nov. 1847 to 1896. The charter of this congregation dates from 1760. Eugene L. Armbruster Collection 1922 Views 1,3 and 4. View 2: March 1924.
