Peddlers-foodstuff: Orchard Street and its variegated merchandise; a Manhattan scene long identified with this East Side thoroughfare. January of 1940 will see the last of this, as at that date the new Essex Street Municipal Market will be opened and a City ordinance abolishing pushcarts enforced. Note the placards in the store windows stating (in vain) that the market will remain. There are four views in this series and the photographers vantage point is between Stanton and Rivington Street's. Gift of Beecher Ogden (No. 3) January 6, 1940
