Manhattan: Central Park - [View of the Arsenal Building.]

Central Park: A set of 5 views of the Arsenal under reconstruction as viewed westward (north and southward) from Fifth Ave. (foreground) at East 64th Street. This structure was erected in 1848 at a cost of $30,000 (as given in 1853). The City of New York purchased same in 1856 from the State for a sum of $275,000. The first floor was used for Administrative offices while the 2nd and 3rd were occupied by the Museum, which later became the American Museum of Natural History. The Meteorological Observatory for years occupied a large upper room. January 1924. Eugene L. Armbruster Collection.
