Manhattan: South Street - Whitehall Street

South Street, east of Whitehall Street, as photographed from the South Ferry "El" station platform. On the right are the various East River piers. Note the early sailing vessels. On the left is the Eastern Hotel, and known as such since 1856. The original building was erected prior to 1790, when it was purchased by John B. Coles for 350 pounds. In 1822 it became the Eagle Hotel, a tavern. Much of the frame work is solid mahogany, having been imported as ballast by the original owner, a sea captain.
