Bridges - Hell Gate Bridge - [The bridge begins at Port Norris, Bronx, spanning Ward's and Randall's Islands, to Astoria, Queens.]

(1) Hell Gate Bridge spans the notorious channel, called Hell Gate; at the convergance of Long Island Sound and the East River. The seething whirlpools and conflicting currents, made it extremely unnavigable; sinking many vessels, and drowning innumerable men: hence the name. The bridge begins at Port Morris in the Bronx, spanning Ward's and Randall's Islands, to Astoria in Queens. It is one of the classics of modern achievement, being the world's longest continued span.
