Manhattan: Park Avenue - 50th Street
Park Avenue, north from 51st Street, showing St. Bartholomew's Protestant Episcopal Church (B.G. Goodhue, architect), east side from 50th to 51st Streets, built in 1918 on the site of F. & M. Schaefer's Brewery. Beyond the Hotel ambassador (1919), 51st to 52nd Streets, continuing up the east side, stand the Montana apartments, built in 1912 on the site of the old Steinway Piano factory, from 52nd to 53rd Streets. The little building on the N.E. corner of 53rd Street is one of the left-overs from the days before the railroad was electrified and the tracks covered over below 56th Street. A saloon used to occupy the parlor store. About 1925 it will give away to a 15-story apartment building. Note the little parks down the center of the avenue. They will be considerably narrowed in the alteration of 1927-28, again planted with grass and the public kept out.
