Queens: Northern Boulevard - Main Street

Northern Boulevard, south side, east of Main St., showing in a set of three views the Quaker Meeting House of Flushing. The land upon which this building was erected (from 1694-5) was purchased in 1692 for the sum of £ 46. On May 30, 1696 their first annual meeting was held here. This building was shingled plastered, and repaired in 1704. The Quaker records state: A new building was erected in 1719 near the old one and was 65'x42' in size. This refers probably to an addition. In 1763, the gallery was taken out and a floor was laid, making it a two story structure. The British used the structure as a barrack, hospital, prison, and bay magazine; being restored to the original owner in 1783. The Orthodox Quakers built a meeting house east of the old (Hicksite), meeting house in the 1830's. The picket fence surrounding this building was removed in 1911, and the Orthodox Meeting House in 1909 1922 View 2: March 1924. View 3: July 1925. Eugene L. Armbruster Collection
