Manhattan: Downing Street - Bleecker Street

Downing Street, southwest from Bleecker Street (originally Herring Street). Downing Street is the first of seven streets laid out in the old Herring Farm at right angles to Herring (later Bleecker) and Bedford Streets. Now that Sixth Avenue is to be extended south, the northeastern end of this street will be swallowed up in the extension. The building on the north corner of Bleecker Street, shown at the right, will be demolished, also the Church of Our Lady of Pompeii on the south corner (see Bleecker Street) and Nos. 8, 10 Downing Street, the two five-story tenement houses adjoining the church. 1926.
