Manhattan: 5th Avenue - 34th Street

(1) Fifth Avenue, east side (buildings thereupon), at E. 34th Street (center intersection). The photographer is viewing northeastward across the Empire State Building site, from a point to the west of the Avenue on W. 33rd Street. Occupying the 34th-35th Street frontage is B. Altman's department store. Across the roof of same appears the upper portion of the Combustion Engineering Building on Madison Avenue. In the left background is the Lincoln Building. P. L. Sperr (2) Another view of the same intersection, taken at an earlier date. The farther building is the B. Altman & Co. department store; the buildings in the foreground are at the southeast corner of the intersection. This view is notable for the distinctness of the ornamentation around the Altman building. The columns are in the Ionic order of classical Greek architecture. Wilberforce Eames Collection 1916
