Second Avenue, east side, north from East 36th Street, showing the cleared area extending to 37th Street. This is to be excavated for the approach to the new Midtown-Queens tunnel. Note the clearance at the far corner of 37th Street which opens to view the rears of tenements that face on 38th Street. The 16 story apartment house, No. 301 East, is at the N.E. corner of this thoroughfare. To the right is the darkened side of the New York Public Library branch. This will be demolished in early 1940.
