Manhattan: Park Avenue - 41st Street

Park Avenue, 41st to 42nd Streets (the future Pershing Square), showing construction of viaduct for automobile traffic over the old northern entrance to the Murray Hill tunnel and around the western shoulder of the new Grand Central Station. Work on this project was commenced November 2, 1917. The Hotel Commodore, as shown here, is quite new. On the east side of Park Avenue, from 41st to 42nd Streets, the old Grand Union Hotel stood until its demolition in 1914; the southern end of the new East Side express station of the new subway, nearly ready to open, lies underneath. The old elevated station, originally only one end of a short shuttle, will stand here till 1924. Compare this with 1914, 1920, 1923, and later pictures. Early 1918. Brown Brothers.
