Manhattan: 6th Avenue - Downing Street.

Sixth Avenue, at the S.W. corner of Downing Street, showing the former site of the church of Our Lady of Pompeii. This is included in the new 6th Avenue extension. The new church is one block above, at Bleecker and Carmine Streets. The photographer gives his vantage point as Hancock Street, a former one block street. This is also included in the new roadway and its identity lost. Downing Street runs across the view. The 2 1/2 story structures shown are on same. October 11, 1928 Views 1,2 P.L. Sperr

The elongated 3-story structure on the right, that apparently faces Sixth Avenue is No. 2 Minetta Lane. Minetta Place, an enclosed Court in the center of this block formerly was in the foreground; the northern extremity of which is shown enclosed by a fence in views 2 (middle) and 3 (right).
