Manhattan: 36th Street (East) - 1st Avenue

East 36th Street, north side, between First and Second Avenues, showing the Midtown Queens tunnel plaza being cleared. Workmen are occupied on the former site of St. Gabriel's Church and School. Across same appear buildings at 37th Street (left of center) and First Avenue (right of center). The smoke stacks above the former, are atop the Consolidated Edison Co. plant on First Avenue. Note at the left margin the New York Public Library branch library remaining at this date. Early 1940 will see this razed.
