Manhattan: 5th Avenue - 34th Street

Fifth Avenue, west side, north from West 34th Street (left), showing prominently the Alexander T. Stewart mansion at the N.W. corner. This subsequently became the Manhattan Club and early in the twentieth century was demolished. Originally the site was occupied by the "Sarsaparilla" Thompson home. The structure indicated with an (X) was formerly the Caswell house which later became the home of the University Club. After being remodelled (1887) in the Queen Anne style it housed the present New York Club. Separating these two club structures is the 2-story Avery Gallery. To the right margin appears a portion of the Brick Presbyterian Church at the N.W. corner of 37th Street. Circa 1900 Ewing Galloway
