Manhattan: Washington Square North - MacDougal Street

(1) Washington Square North, east from Macdougal Street (Washington Square West). The building on the N.E. corner is the Richmond Hill, an apartment house built about 1900 on the site of two old houses. In the background rises the new apartment build- ing at 1 University Place. (2) The same view, a little over two years later, and from a little nearer to Washington Square, so that part of the One Fifth Avenue apartment house shows over the roof of 26 Washington Square North, adjoining the Richmond Hill. Washington Square North is geographically a part of Waverly Place (q.v.), but was set apart and given its own house numbers early in the 1850's. February 24, 1933. P. L. Sperr.
