(1) York Avenue (Avenue A), east side, from 89th to 91st Streets, showing, on the northeast corner of 89th Street, one of the buildings of the House of the Good Shepherd, "a house of refuge for fallen women and girls, who desire to reform" (King's Handbook of New York City, 1892). Other buildings of the House of the Good Shepherd are farther east in the same block. The House of the Good Shepherd was founded in 1857; this building on the N.E. corner of 89th Street, which used to belong to St. Ann's Home, was built around 1885. St. Ann's Home for Destitute Children, founded in 1879, occupies the S.E. corner of 90th Street. The whole block, at the time of this picture, is about to be razed. In the block from 91st to 92nd Streets may be seen the new garage of the Municipal Asphalt Plant. January 31, 1928. P. L. Sperr.
