York Avenue, west side, from 89th to 91st Streets, with clearing on east side from 89th to 90th Streets. The block from 89th to 90th Streets was occupied till about 1918 by St. Joseph's Orphan Asylum, an institution for German Children, incorporated in 1859. The cigar factory on the S.W. corner of 90th Street used to be one of the Orphan Asylum buildings, erected in the early 1880's. 1731-33-35 York Avenue (formerly Avenue A), at and adjoining the N.W. corner of 90th Street, antedate 1891; 1791 on the corner is a frame house. The 5-story buildings, above them, to the corner of 91st Street, were not built till around 1895. March 29, 1929. P. L. Sperr.
