Manhattan: 6th Avenue - 48th Street

1220 to 1230 Sixth Avenue, at adjoining and north of the N.E. corner of W. 48th Street. All of these structures appear in View 1 while No.2 shows only three, No's. 1220 to 1224. At the rear of these buildings the R.K.O. Center Theatre is being erected. The Sixth Avenue "El" line in April 1939 will have disappeared and the brownstone buildings at this site ready for demolition. The New York Times of April 3, 1939 reports the immediate erection of a 20 story Rockefeller Center structure on this site, same consummating this vast midtown commercial and amusement center which started in 1931. Occupancy is scheduled for March 1, 1940. An interesting feature will be the overlapping of the new building at the 8th floor on the steel work of the Center Theatre.
