Manhattan: Houston Street (East) - 2nd Avenue
East Houston Street, north side, east from but not including Second Ave., showing construction work on the Independent System Subway (Eighth Ave. Subway) after the houses which stood on this site were razed. This area was later transformed into a playground. On the extreme left are seen the rears of buildings facing on East 1st Street, between Second and First Aves. Also shown (background) is the 1st Street station of the Second Ave. Elevated Line, running at this point on First Ave. May 9, 1930. P. L. Sperr.
