Manhattan: Bedford Street - Houston Street

(1) Bedford Street, northwest from Houston Street at Congress (Sixth Avenue Extension). Bedford Street runs northwest, parallel to the third section (originally Herring's Street) of Bleecker Street, to Christopher Street, and, like the corresponding section of Bleecker, lies almost entirely within the old Herring farm. The farm line crosses Bedford Street at Nos. 10 and 17 (about where two cars are parked together on the east side of the street a hundred feet north of the plaza). The little plaza in the foreground is formed by the junction of the original Houston Street (from the Bowery to this point), the former Hammersley Street (at the left), which in 1858 was made part of Houston Street, and Bedford Street, which on the angle of Bleecker Street, might have been absorbed by Houston had it not been for Hammersley Street. At the right, Hancock Extension, comes into the plaza at right angles to Houston Street.
