Manhattan: 61st Street (East) - Avenue A

421 East 61st Street, north side, between York and First Aves., showing the Col. Smith House (also known as the Adams Mansion). This house was built in 1799 by Colonel Smith, a son-in-law of President Adams. One version states that it was built in 1777 by Peter Pra Van Sairt for a stable to his residence and he sold (1795) the mansion, stables and other buildings to Col. Wm. S. Smith. The latter failed in business and his stable became a tavern and was used as such until 1830 when Jeremiah Fowle purchased it, whose daughter occupied it until 1906. The Consolidated Gas Company sold this building in December 1924 to the Colonial Dames. This set consists of 4 views taken at the same time. February 1924. Eugene L. Armbruster Collection.
