Manhattan: Broadway - Vesey Street

Broadway, west side, north from Vesey Street, showing prominently the old Astor House, built 1832, occupying the entire block frontage to Barclay Street. Early records inform us that this site was an encampment for negro slaves in 1780. Numbers of these died of smallpox and were buried where the Sun (formerly A. T. Stewart) Building stands at the N. E. corner of Broadway and Chambers Street. The Woolworth Building was erected in 1912 and the Transportation Building in 1926. The latter at the far corner, while the former in the block above.
