Manhattan: 34th Street (East) - 2nd Avenue

E. 34th Street, south side, west from Second to Third Avenues, showing a row of structures that will remain and face the entrance to the 38th Street tunnel under the East River. On the two Avenues mentioned appear their respective "E1" lines and 34th Street stations. Previous to the Summer of 1938 these were joined by a spur line, a remnant of a link with the Ferry to Borden Avenue. Early legislation necessitated same, stating that all transportation facilities join up with either railroad terminals or water facilities. The writer believes the drug store appearing on the left to be place of business from which Col. O'Brien emanated and was fatally attacked during the Draft Riots of 1863.
