Manhattan: Houston Street (West - Hancock Street
168 West Houston Street (33 Hancock Street); and Nos. 164, 162-160, 158, north side, at and adjoining the N.E. corner of Hancock Street, (the future N.E. corner of Sixth Avenue and Houston Street), seen from the northern end of Congress Street across the little plaza formed by the concurrence of Houston Street, Bedford Street, and the western section of Houston Street (formerly Hammersley Street). Every single building visible in this picture is to be demolished the following year, when work begins on the new Independent (Municipal) Subway and the extension of Sixth Avenue south from its original beginning at Carmine Street and Minetta Lane. The Houston Street branch of the new subway will curve under the north side of Houston Street, where the tenement houses and moving picture theatre appear in this picture. 1926.
