Manhattan: 5th Avenue - 70th Street

The Lenox Library, Fifth Avenue, east side, from 70th to 71st Streets. This library was founded by a wealthy and eccentric bibliophile and collector who, after arousing considerable public feeling by refusing to let the historian Prescott consult certain documents in his collection suddenly opened his library to the public and created a trust fund to assure its continuation after his death. The Lenox Library has combined with the Astor and Tilden foundations to form the New York Public Library, and will move into the new building, which is now under construction on the site of the Fifth Avenue reservoir, around 1910. Henry Clay Frick will build his mansion on this site, and in 1935 this mansion will be converted into a public art gallery. 1905. August Loeffler, from P. L. Sperr Collection.
