Manhattan: Lafayette Street - 4th Street (East)

(1) 428-434 and 436-440 Lafayette Street, west side, between East 4th Street and Astor Place. No. 428-434 is known as the "Colonnade Buildings." It is a part of the row of houses which was known as Colonnade Row, where John Jacob Astor and other prominent merchants lived in the 1870's. The buildings shown in this view is the northern half of the Row and its northernmost section was for many years occupied by the Churchman, the leading paper of the Protestant Episcopal Church. It was then known as 47 Lafayette Place and was the centre of New York's intellectual supremacy. For a number of years the building has been occupied by the Conte Restaurant and is still there to date (1937). September 26, 1929. P. L. Sperr.
