Manhattan: Houston Street (West - Varick Street

222 to 200 West Houston Street (western section, formerly Hammersley Street), north side, east of and from Varick Street. The roofs of Nos. 58-46 Downing Street, on the south side of Downing, are shown at the left. In the left foreground of the picture we are looking down on the old Hammersley Iron Foundry, originally 51-53 Hammersley Street and 60 Downing Street; it extends through the block. The Houston Street wing has been cut down from three-stories to one-story, and the building made over into a garage. The old boundary line between the Trinity Church Farm and the Herring Farm runs along the backs of the Houston Street houses, dividing the block. The Downing Street part of it, west to and including No. 66 Downing Street, is all inside the old Herring Farm. June 23, 1930. P. L. Sperr.
