Manhattan: Downing Street - Varick Street

Downing Street, northeast from and including Varick Street. The southwestern corner of the old Herring Farm, within which lies all but the westernmost few feet of Downing Street, is just off the picture to the right, the observer is standing in the former Trinity Church Farm. Downing Street is the first of seven streets laid out in the Herring Farm at right angles to Bedford and Herring (now Bleecker) Streets. The tall building on the horizon, seen down Downing Street, is the One Fifth Avenue apartment hotel; a little to the right of it the tower of the brand new Consolidated Gas Building, on East 14th Street, can be discerned.
