Manhattan: Stuyvesant Street - 2nd Avenue

Stuyvesant Street, at the N.W. corner of Second Ave., showing St. Mark's Church (P.E.). The present church was consecrated in 1829 and under it lies buried Peter Stuyvesant, the last of the Dutch Colonial Governors, who died in 1682 and was laid there when the Chapel occupied the site. The bodies of Henry Slaughter, the English royal Governor, and Daniel Tompkins, early Governor of New York State also rest there. It is also known as "St. Mark's on the Bouwerie." 1936. W.P.A. Photo.
